For years I had lived in the shadow of a broken marriage, carrying disappointment like stones in my chest. Life had narrowed into routines and obligations, and the world felt suffocating, as though every path I walked had been paved with regret. I did not set out to be transformed; I only wanted to try something new. What followed was a small, ordinary invitation that became the hinge of a different life.

The Invitation That Changed Everything

Early on, while we were still dating, Sean invited me to join him on a mini adventure. He had already discovered the quiet joy of trail running and, knowing my eagerness to try new things, he asked me to step into the wilderness with him. There was nothing dramatic about the invitation — just a pair of running shoes, a backpack with water, and a willingness to leave the pavement behind. That simplicity is part of what made it possible. I laced up, followed, and ran my first trail.

First Steps and Immediate Reality

The first run was humbling. The trail was not a smooth, predictable road; it was a winding, uneven thing. Rocks jutted like obstacles, roots tangled like memories, and the climb burned in my lungs. Every step required attention. Where the pavement rewards a steady rhythm, the trail demands your presence: eyes scanning for footing, body adjusting to sudden changes in grade, breath finding a new cadence. It was physically harder than I expected, and that honesty was part of its appeal.

With Sean beside me, the difficulty felt shared. He pointed out a safe line through a rocky section, slowed when I needed to catch my breath, and laughed when I mumbled some profanity. The wilderness was not as quiet and empty as I had anticipated; it was full of small, living things — birds calling from the branches above, the wind whispering through tall grass, the distant murmur of water. Our footsteps found a rhythm that matched the landscape, and in that rhythm I discovered something I had not felt in a long time: ease.

The Trail as Teacher

Trail running taught me lessons that no gym or therapist could fully replicate. It taught me resilience in a practical, embodied way. When the climb burned and my legs felt like lead, the only option was to keep moving, one step at a time. The trail did not care about my past; it only required my presence. That requirement was liberating. It turned abstract ideas about healing into concrete actions: breathe, place your foot, push, repeat.

It also taught me attention. On the trail, distraction is dangerous. You learn to notice the small things — a loose stone, a hidden root, a change in the trail. That habit of noticing spilled over into other parts of my life. I began to pay attention to how I felt, to the people around me, and to the choices I made. The practice of scanning the ground became a practice of scanning my life for what needed tending.

Finally, the trail taught me joy in motion. There is a particular kind of joy that comes from moving through a landscape you are not accustomed to. It is messy and unpredictable and utterly real. Somewhere between the sweat and the laughter, I fell in love — not only with Sean, but with the feeling the trail gave me: freedom, possibility, and a sense that my body and mind could do more than I had allowed them to.

The Crest and a Promise

At the crest of a hill on that first run, I paused. The horizon opened wide, painted in colours I rarely saw in the city. The air smelled different there — cleaner, sharper, full of goodness. Sean smiled at me, and in that moment I understood that this was more than a run. It was a promise. Not a promise that everything would be perfect, but a promise that tomorrow could be different, that love could be real, and that life could be lived with intention.

I breathed deeply, tasting possibility. The trail had offered me a new vocabulary for living: step, breathe, notice, move forward. It was not an escape from my past; it was a way to carry it differently going forward. The stones in my chest did not vanish, but they became part of the load I could manage. Scars became evidence of survival rather than proof of failure.

Why I Kept Running

After that first day I wanted more. I ran not to outrun my past but to move toward something greater. Trail running became a practice — a way to test limits, to celebrate small victories, and to be present in a world that often demands multitasking and hurry. Each run revealed a new strength: a hill I could climb without stopping, a technical descent I could navigate with confidence, a longer distance that no longer felt impossible.

The trail also reshaped my relationships. Running with Sean was a shared language: we learned to read each other’s pace, to offer encouragement without pressure, and to celebrate the ordinary. Those runs became a place where conversation could happen naturally, where silence was comfortable, and where mutual care was expressed through simple acts — handing over a water bottle, waiting at a junction, pointing out a view.

The Beginning of a New Chapter

The trail was no longer just dirt and stone. It became the beginning of a new chapter — one in which every step mattered and every climb revealed strength I didn’t know I had. It taught me that pain could be carried, that scars could be worn like armour, and that joy could be found in the simplest act of moving forward. The wilderness did not fix everything, but it offered a way to live that felt truer to who I wanted to be.

I still carry the lessons from that first run with me. On hard days I remember the crest of that hill and the horizon that opened up there. On good days I run to celebrate. And always, I run because the trail keeps teaching me how to be present, how to be brave, and how to keep going when the path is uncertain. The invitation to step into the wilderness was small and ordinary, but it led me to a life that feels, at last, wide enough to breathe in.

“Strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.”

Part II Releasing Thursday, 23 July 2026

Subscribe, like and comment

Fuel the Miles, Fuel the Stories 🌲

If you enjoy the stories, reflections, and adventures I share here, you can now support my work directly!

Any donations or tips go straight into my Running Fund.
