The trail no longer feels like just my personal battlefield; it has become a classroom, a sanctuary, and a place of calling. I began by running for myself, but now I feel compelled to run for others. To teach, to guide, to help those who believe they cannot rise. Becoming a personal trainer is not just about fitness; it is about showing people that resilience can be learned, practiced, and lived.

The Spiritual Dimension

The trail has always been more than dirt and stone. It is a place where silence speaks, where nature reminds me of gratitude, and where endurance becomes prayer. Lighting a candle each morning taught me to begin with intention. Running beneath the sunrise taught me that light always follows effort. In the rhythm of breath and footfall, I discovered a spiritual truth: strength is not only physical, but also the courage to keep moving when the path is uncertain.

Competition as Transformation

Hyrox and trail races became more than events; they became mirrors of my growth. Each race tested not just my body, but my mind and spirit. I learned to compete not against others, but against the version of myself that doubted, hesitated, or feared. Every medal, every finish line, every climb conquered was proof that discipline and resilience can turn fear into fuel. Competition became a way to measure progress, but also a way to celebrate survival.

The Mont-Aux Sources Dream

For three years, every September, we helped at the Mont-Aux Sources 50km Ultra Trail Race. Hiking up from the carpark to Tugela Falls, we waited at the checkpoint as athletes streamed past. Each year, I couldn’t help but wonder: Could I be one of them? Could I compete in this Ultra Race?

That question became a decision after my personal triumph at the Magoebas 30km Ultra Trail Race. 2026 would be my year to do as much as possible. I had endured medical battles, rebuilt my fitness, found my calling, written and self-published my first book, and started saving for my Mont-Aux Sources entry. Nothing was going to stop me.

Brad adjusted my daily workout routine to prepare me for the 50km Ultra while still managing FND. At the end of June 2026, I set myself a challenge: run a half marathon every Saturday and Sunday for the month of July. 42.2km per weekend, 168.8km for the month, plus 4–5 gym sessions each week. Every stride, every rep, every drop of sweat was an investment in the race ahead.

On 12 September 2026, Mont-Aux Sources will no longer be just a checkpoint I watch from the sidelines. It will be the race where I prove to myself that resilience, discipline, and faith can carry me through 50km of wilderness.

What Lies Ahead

Mont-Aux Sources is not the finish line; it is the gateway. The race will mark a milestone, but my journey continues beyond that summit.

In November 2026, I will return to Hyrox for my second competition, determined to beat my previous time.

In 2027, the Rhodes Ultra Trail Race awaits — a new frontier, a new test of endurance, and a new opportunity to discover what lies within me when the trail stretches far and the climb grows steep.

In 2027, I will take on the Magoebas 60km Ultra Trail Race, pushing myself further than ever before on terrain that demands grit and patience.

The Deadly Dozen 2027 will challenge me in ways few races can — a test of strength, stamina, and mental resilience.

In 2027, I will also step back into the Hyrox arena, continuing to refine my performance and prove that resilience is built one race at a time.

And by 2027/2028, I will step into a new arena: the Mini Triathlon, combining running, cycling, and swimming into a single pursuit of balance and endurance.

These goals are not just races; they are promises to myself. Promises that I will keep moving forward, keep challenging limits, and keep living with intention.

Gratitude and Calling

Now, at 37, I am a full-time worker, a father to my amazing 11-year-old daughter Kimberley, and married to the love of my life, Sean — my greatest supporter and companion through every climb and every setback. Life means more than eat, work, sleep. I am grateful for nature, my family, my pets, my home, my car, food on the table — the simple things so easily taken for granted.

And I ask myself: did everything I endured shed new light on my life? Did it reveal my calling? Perhaps it did. Perhaps my calling is to become a personal trainer — to help others find strength, resilience, and freedom in the same way the trail and the gym helped me.

“The trail ahead is endless, but each race is a reminder: resilience is not about reaching the end, it is about daring to begin again.”

Subscribe, like and comment

Fuel the Miles, Fuel the Stories 🌲

If you enjoy the stories, reflections, and adventures I share here, you can now support my work directly!

Any donations or tips go straight into my Running Fund.
