Today I took on the ARC Irene 10km race — and what a challenge it turned out to be! With 121m of elevation gain, an average cadence of 157 spm, and my heart rate sitting between 156–172 bpm for 92% of the race, it was a true test of endurance.
The Numbers
- Distance: 10km
- Time: 59 minutes
- Average pace: 5:56 per km
- Placement: 7th out of 92 runners (my husband came in 8th!)
The Experience
The heat was relentless at 29°C, and I battled shin splints for most of the race. Halfway through, I questioned whether I could hold on, but I kept pushing. Every step reminded me that hard work and training really do pay off.

Crossing the finish line under the hour mark was an incredible feeling — proof that consistency and determination matter more than perfect conditions.
Gear Check
This was only my second race with my new Kiprun 500 Cushion shoes, and they were amazing. Comfortable, responsive, and supportive — they helped me power through despite the shin splints and the heat.

Reflection
I’m proud of my result, but even more proud of the grit it took to get there. Running teaches me something new every time: that strength often shows up when you least expect it.

Hard work, training, and the refusal to quit — that’s what carried me to the finish line today.
