My journey: fitness, trails, travel, and tranquility

The “Easy” Trap: 6.8 Kilometers of Grit

My personal trainer has a funny way of describing workouts.

Today’s challenge was introduced as:

“Easy one… but hard!”

On paper, it looked simple enough. Two machines, one goal, and a race against the clock. But as any athlete knows, the simplest workouts are often the most brutal.

There is nowhere to hide when it’s just you, the monitor, and a dwindling distance.

The Gauntlet

The ladder was set. Four sets of rowing, interspersed with four runs that teased me by getting shorter as my legs got heavier:

1km Row / 1km Run
1km Row / 800m Run
1km Row / 600m Run
1km Row / 400m Run

Pushing the Redline

From the first pull of the rower, I knew I was in for a battle. I didn’t come to just finish; I came to master my strength and push the limits of what I thought was possible.

By the second round, the “easy” part of the description had completely vanished. Sweat wasn’t just dripping; it was pouring.

My heart rate stayed locked in the 154–171 bpm range for 70% of the session. That is the “pain cave”—the place where your lungs burn, your legs turn to lead, and your mind starts asking you why you’re doing this.

The answer? Because I love the challenge.

The Road to Sub-30

I finished today with nothing left in the tank, but I’m already looking at the clock.

The goal is set: 30 minutes.

To some, it’s just a number. To me, it’s the next barrier to break.

It’s going to require faster transitions, a more aggressive split on the rower, and a flat-out sprint on those final running legs.

It can be done, and I will do it.

Stay tuned. The clock is ticking.
